Feet on the Street’ Recycling Campaign
The Mayor’s Office of Sustainability in conjunction with the Office of Solid Waste Services will be conducting a project dubbed ‘Feet on the Street’ in an effort to reduce the amount of contamination in the City’s single stream recycling carts. The eight week project is made possible through a generous grant from The Recycling Partnership, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping municipalities improve their recycling programs.
The project starts on Monday, July 10th and will take place on four of the City’s recycling routes which includes the following neighborhoods: Ansley Park, Midtown, Grant Park, Peoplestown, West End and Collier Heights.
Here’s what will happen:
- A team of City of Atlanta employees will hit the pavement in the early morning before the recycling trucks run their routes
- Each recycling bin will inspected and deemed contaminated or acceptable
- Any bin that is deemed contaminated will be tagged with an “Oops Tag” (see below) and not picked up by the recycling truck
- Residents are asked to correct their contamination issue
- Recycling will be picked up the following week assuming corrective action has taken place
Did you know that the number one “oops” in the City’s recycling program is residents bagging their recyclables? (Only loose and clean items should be placed in your blue recycling cart.) When recyclable items that are placed in plastic bags reach the Materials Recovery Facility (or MRF), they have to be manually emptied before they can be sorted and recovered as individual commodities. Please do not bag your recyclable items!
