Did you know Midtown almost lost Grady High School last year? A newly proposed boundary map defining Midtown’s City Council districts was initially approved by Atlanta City Council in December 2011….moving Grady out of the Midtown City Council District 2 in 2013.
Families in Midtown whose children attend Grady would not have had the opportunity to vote on an Atlanta Public School representative or an Atlanta City Council representative who would have direct jurisdiction over the high school their child attends.
Led by the MNA’s Education Committee and other MNA members, a strategy was developed to communicate the importance of keeping Midtown’s neighborhood together and keeping Grady High School a part of Midtown and District 2. The team attended dozens of meetings and made presentations to the City of Atlanta Committee on Council and directly to the full City Council.
Result: Atlanta City Council changed the boundary map to keep representation of Grady High School in Midtown!
