A simple idea really can lead to major (and lasting) community-building event. Did you know Piedmont Park Conservancy began as a result of “clean up” efforts by MNA members and neighbors? When MNA members Mike an Izzie Samrau moved to 10th Street in the mid-1980s, they were surprised by Piedmont Park’s state of disrepair. Along with other neighbors, they formed a group because they wanted to “clean up our front yard.”
Mike researched New York’s Central Park Conservancy, using it as an organizational model for the group. In the late 80s, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was formed as Piedmont Park Conservancy. A Memorandum of Understanding was reached with City of Atlanta to form a public/private partnership and Mike became the first president of Piedmont Park Conservancy. Many other community members were involved in this significant effort including businessman Guy Millner and former Midtown Alliance president Susan Mendheim.
The Conservancy has since raised nearly $100 Million and completed additions and renovations including the restoration of the Active Oval, Greystone (historic bathhouse), the Aquatic Center, Piedmont Dog Park and Legacy Fountains.
One idea, combined with volunteers and neighbors, can transform our community like these neighbors did.
